Vitor Pereira out of running for Everton manager's job

Vitor Pereira says he has pulled out of the running to become the new Everton manager.

The Shanghai SIPG coach was high on the Toffees' list to succeed the sacked Marco Silva on a permanent basis.

Duncan Ferguson is currently in caretaker charge.

"It's an honour and I'm grateful to be considered by a club I have so much respect for but I am still coach of SIPG and SIPG is a club close to my heart," Pereira told Sky Sports News.

"It means that in this moment I'm not in a position to make any other commitments. I need time to think and plan my future by looking at the options I have."

His fellow Portuguese Silva was sacked after 18 months in charge following the 5-2 Merseyside derby defeat by Liverpool at Anfield.

Everton still plan to appoint a permanent manager as soon as they can despite beating Chelsea 3-1 on Saturday under Ferguson.

There was informal contact to gauge the extent of sacked ex-Arsenal boss Unai Emery's interest, while Bournemouth's Eddie Howe is another manager with admirers in the Everton boardroom.

Howe, however, insists he is committed to the Cherries and is unlikely to leave mid-season - while Spaniard Marcelino is another out-of-work coach looking for a route back into football after he was sacked by Valencia earlier this season.

Former Everton manager David Moyes has been discussed and Pereira's announcement could bring the Scot back into contention. Carlo Ancelotti, who was sacked by Italian side Napoli on Tuesday, is also a contender. The Italian was already on the list of candidates and Everton's hierarchy are sure to investigate his potential availability.

Pereira, 51, led Porto to back-to-back Primeira Liga titles after stepping up from his previous role as assistant manager in 2011. He was interviewed for the Everton manager's job in 2013 before Roberto Martinez was appointed as successor to Moyes.

After a brief stint in charge of Saudi side Al-Ahli, he helped Greek club Olympiakos win a league and cup double in 2015, but unsuccessful spells followed in charge of Fenerbahce and 1860 Munich.

He took over at Shanghai SIPG in December 2017 and led them to their first league title in his first season in charge.

This guy has managed about 10 clubs in as many years! We've had Koeman and Silva, another journeyman manager is the last thing we need.

Everton could be the only club where they lose out by replacing their caretaker manager. Unless they've got some big name superstar lined up they should give big Dunc the job till after Christmas and see how many points he can get, because teams like Arsenal (Home) / Burnley (Home) / Newcastle (Away) are exactly the game Everton can win if they play the way they played against Chelsea.

I know it was only one game, but for the first time in what seems an age, Everton seemed a completely different beast on Saturday.

Moshiri, the fans stayed with you during your hopeless dalliance with with Silva, show them some respect by keeping Ferguson in charge for the remainder of the season

Why not see what big Dunc can do this season? Everton have the players to rescue a top half finish. They won't do any better under a big name this season and they could do a lot worse and spend a load doing it.

Give it to Duncan till the end of the season . No one will shirk and hide on the pitch like they have been for months. Thank God Moshiri has not brought in a other distinctly average foreigner .......yet!

They should not rush this appointment, look what has happened in the past.

Get a temp until the end of the season, maybe big Dunc, perhaps with an established Prem manager and reassess from there.

How many under performing forgin managers does the premier league need. Let's be honest most don't cover themselfs in much glory

Best performance of their season was last weekend.

I'm a natural here but why not give Big Dunk a chance till the new year and see how he goes.

They showed some proper heart and desire to play for the shirt

Good to see Big Duncan get the three points on Saturday. I saw him in Dundee United reserves first of all. We had a great reserve team then. Jim McLean was the manager at that point and throughout the club at that point no matter who we were up against we were setup to win. Managers these days would be wise to remember that.

Also RIP Jim Smith who signed Christian Dailly for Derby from DUFC.

Who? Seriously these clubs have more money than sense and it’s the fans that prop these clubs up that suffer most. As a neutral I saw an Everton side play with passion, commitment, energy and quality on Saturday something I haven’t seen from an Everton side in a long time - why change it if that’s the positive reaction under Ferguson?

Not a Blue, but maybe bringing in somebody like Moyes with the proviso that Duncan Ferguson is assistant give him some experience with a view to him eventually becoming manager. Its painfully obvious the guy bleeds blue, and loves the club, could see it when he played and could see the pride he had leading them out on Saturday. Major respect for him as a player and how he represents the club now
