Caleb Taylor and Joe Nuttall — Cheltenham kept their survival hopes alive with victory over Peterborough

Cheltenham kept their survival hopes alive going into the final day of the League One season after a 2-0 home win over promotion-chasing Peterborough.

First-half goals from Joe Nuttall and Matty Taylor took Town, in the final relegation place, two points behind Burton.

With their play-off spot already secured, Posh boss Darren Ferguson rested a host of regulars, making seven changes.

And his youthful side were blown away in the first half by the Robins, who knew anything other than a win meant relegation with one game to play.

Nuttall reacted quickest to bundle the ball over the line from close range after goalkeeper Nicholas Bilokapic could only parry Liam Sercombe's shot in the 11th minute.

The lead was doubled 10 minutes later when Taylor brought down a ball forward from Lewis Freestone and applied an expert finish.

Taylor crashed a shot against the post in the 32nd minute after Liam Kinsella's pass and Elliott Bonds forced Bilokapic into a smart save two minutes later.

Posh threatened through Ricky-Jade Jones before half-time, but they were second best and Taylor and Bonds both forced Bilokapic into action in the second half.

At the other end, Luke Southwood parried Jonson Clarke-Harris' shot in the 58th minute and kept out a late header from the centre forward.

Cheltenham must beat Stevenage on Saturday and hope that Burton fail to win at Fleetwood and/or Cambridge lose to Port Vale, if they are to escape the drop.

Yes Stephen, I've often thought about this. There used to be a rule whereby managers had to pick their strongest team. I'm not sure in which competitions that applied and who can say what the strongest team should be?

Well done Cheltenham one more hurdle to get over, should have 5 or 6 for Cheltenham. Bet some other teams won’t be happy with the squad that Peterborough put out. Or the fans especially the ones that travelled to the game.

Agreed - whilst it helps my team, Bolton, with a free hit on Saturday I would have hated my club to do this because I know we've been on the other end.

Peterborough's management had a duty to football as a whole and failed miserably.

Although we're already down I'd like to see us at least win our final game and at the same time give Darrell Clark a helping hand in his great escape attempt as a thank you for the success he brought to the Vale.
If he hadn't suffered such a tragedy who knows where we'd be now? Not going back to L2 for a start!

We should of tried to chase Derby down, Smashed these 5-0 then beat up Bolton in the last game as Carlisle might of gone out on a high Derby switch off assuming all they've got to do is turn up and beat Carlisle.. Giving up before the fat lady sings is unforgivable

This is why the play offs should be scrapped as I've said before. The EFL creates this it's not Peterborough fault. They would have been chasing Bolton for third spot without them. They should be consigned to the bin like the relegation ones were long ago.

Sad that Posh decided to field a weak team in what was an important fixture for 3 sides in League 1, if the shoe was on the other foot, Posh would be the first club to whinge. Hope justice will be done in the playoffs and Posh get their just desserts, basically stuck the middle finger up to the sides in League 1, disgraceful.

Looks to me that Peterborough gave up on an albeit slim chance of automatic promotion just to weaken their rivals survival chances, pathetic really.

If I was Burton Albion, I would be a little peed off with Ferguson changing 7 players and not playing for the win ! and being quite content in having a playoff position !? Years ago, teams were fined for pulling these stunts ?

I’d be fuming at Ferguson for the team he put out last night if I was a Peterborough fan. I’m sure Brewers fans weren’t impressed either, giving up on even the slimmest of chances of making the autos is unforgivable and brings into question his and his club’s integrity and respect for the other teams fighting relegation. Hope Peterborough get pumped in the play offs.
